PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The Cornell men's heavyweight rowing team's 1V8 and 2V8 crews each placed first in their respective 'C' Finals on the final day of the 2025 IRA National Championship on the Cooper River on Sunday morning.
Cornell's first-place finishes in the 'C' Finals secured the Big Red 13th place overall, while the 3V8 crew achieved 10th place after finishing fourth in the 'B' Final.
In the Ten Eyck point standings, Cornell concluded with 153 points, good for 11th out of 24 crews, its best finish at the IRA National Championship since placing 10th in 2022.
Washington (285 points) hoisted the Ten Eyck Trophy for a second consecutive year and the 15th time since 2007. The Huskies edged Harvard (279 points) by six points to earn its IRA-leading 19th overall championship title.
The first Cornell crew to launch on Sunday was the 2V8 in their 'C' Final, where it surged ahead of Wisconsin in the second quarter of the 2000-meter race and managed to edge out the Badgers' crew by 0.540 seconds with a time of 5:41.200.
Cornell posted a wire-to-wire victory in the 1V8 'C' Final in what turned out to be a closely contested race against Wisconsin. The Big Red held a narrow 0.456-second lead over the Badgers after 500 meters, which shrank to 0.050 seconds at the halfway point and 0.031 seconds at the 1500-meter mark. A strong push from the Big Red crew in the final 500 meters allowed Cornell to finish with a time of 5:31.440, just 0.780 seconds ahead of the Badgers, who clocked in at 5:32.220.
The last race of the day for Cornell showcased the Big Red's 3V8 in the 'B' Final, where Brown pulled away from Dartmouth in the final 500 meters, turning a 0.844-second advantage at the 1500-meter mark into a 2.320-second victory. Cornell (5:40.310) edged out Northeastern by two-tenths of a second to secure fourth place in the race and 10th overall.
