ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior midfielder
Brooke Brown scored her first collegiate goal as the Cornell women's soccer team (2-0-2) extended its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 1-1 draw against Kent State (2-1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field.
Freshman goalkeeper
Samantha Qureshey matched her season high with four saves, helping the Big Red remain unbeaten through its first four matches for the 10th time in program history — and the first since 2023, when Cornell also opened with a 2-0-2 record.
"I thought it was a physical, competitive match. We're disappointed in the result, but we're happy with how much we created in the attacking half of the field," Cornell women's soccer head coach
Rob Ferguson said. "When we moved the ball quickly, added players, kept looking for extra passes, we broke them down, and that's when we got in and created chances. For long enough spells today, we were very successful offensively and did it the way we wanted to do it, but it goes back to putting the ball in the net."
Kent State's Josie Morgan opened the scoring in the 10th minute, slipping between two Cornell defenders on the left side of the penalty area before slotting a right-footed shot inside the near post.
After conceding early, Cornell dictated the rest of the half, outshooting Kent State 9-2 with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Kent State goalkeeper Leah Shaffer kept the Golden Flashes in front with six first-half saves, including a stop on freshman forward
Andrea Wilson from close range a few minutes after Morgan's opening tally.
Qureshey helped keep Cornell's deficit at just one with two saves within a minute, highlighted by her stop on Maya Justice's shot on goal in the 35th minute from the right elbow of the goal area.
Cornell found its equalizer in the 63rd minute as a Kent State defender attempted to pass the ball back to Shaffer, but Brown pounced on the loose ball and lofted it into the open net.
Cornell was able to generate a couple of scoring chances late to take the lead, but Shaffer stood tall in helping preserving the draw.
