ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior Annabel Cheveley matched a school record with four goals to lead the Cornell women's field hockey team to a dominant 5-0 victory over Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon in Barton Hall. The Big Red improved to 2-0, while the Lakers slipped to 0-4.
Cheveley has now scored five times in two contests this season, and her four goals matched a record set six time previously by Big Red players, the last coming when Caroline Ramsey had four scores against Sacred Heart in 2023. Her eight points is the third-most in a single game by a Cornell player.
Cheveley struck three times off penalty corners and added a fourth early in the second half as the Big Red overwhelmed the Lakers with a relentless offensive attack, outshooting the visitors 47-2 and earning 23 penalty corners to Mercyhurst's two.
Sophomore Uma Käding added a goal and an assist, while junior Julia Ramsey contributed three assists from the back line for Cornell. It was Ramsey's fourth career three-assist game, a total that is one off the single game mark. Emmy Horner and Emma Poplyk each notched assists as well. Cornell scored all five goals in a 20-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters.
Senior Jane McNally and sophomore Tayla Williams combined for the shutout in goal for the Big Red, who did not face a shot on goal. Mercyhurst goalkeeper Louise Pert was a standout for the Lakers, making 21 saves in the loss.
After a scoreless first quarter that saw the home team hold a 14-0 shot advantage, Cornell broke through when Cheveley cashed in on a corner - the home team's 11th of the game to that point - just 42 seconds into the second. Three minutes later Käding redirected a shot by Emmy Horner and it was 2-0. Cheveley had a natural hat trick in the third, scoring twice off a corner and banging home a shot off a feed from Käding to close out the scoring in the third.
QUOTABLE
"Annabel Cheveley was fantastic - four goals for her, that's a great effort. She's had a really good season so far with five goals. Some positives today - we won the game. We created a whole bunch of chances, but we've just got to be so much better all over the field. There are some things that we need to fix, and fix urgently." -- Andy Smith, Head Coach of Cornell Field Hockey
