Women's Soccer Stifles Binghamton in Scoreless Draw

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's soccer team (2-2-4) and Binghamton (5-1-2) battled to a scoreless draw at Berman Field on Sunday afternoon, with the Big Red's defense delivering a dominant performance to secure its third clean sheet of the season.

Cornell's back line held Binghamton without a single shot on goal throughout the match. The defensive unit was anchored by seniors Gaby Gonzalez and Izzy Scott, along with junior Kayla Ristianto, who all played the full 90 minutes. Freshman Raya Leikin (57 minutes) and sophomore Amanda Polyniak (37 minutes) also contributed to the shutout effort.

Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Qureshey earned her third clean sheet of the season while extending her shutout streak to 110 minutes and 37 seconds. Qureshey became Cornell's fifth freshman goalkeeper to record at least three shutouts, joining Lisa Brigham (three in 1982), Kate Thompson (nine in 1983), Sherrie Chocola (five in 1984), and Kate Alexander (six in 1992).

While Cornell was unable to find the back of the net, the Big Red controlled much of the offensive flow, outshooting Binghamton, 15-7, and held a commanding 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Big Red had a 6-5 edge in shot attempts during the first half with a 2-0 advantage in shots on target, then dominated the second half with a 9-2 shot advantage and 5-0 edge in shots on goal.

Binghamton goalkeeper Rebecca Kessler made seven saves, five of which came in the second half.

The clearest scoring opportunity of the match actually belonged to Binghamton in the 23rd minute, when Paige Luke's header off a cross struck the left goal post. Cornell's best first-half chances came from Izzy Scott (20th minute) off a header and senior midfielder Tanum Nelson (25th minute), while forward Alanna Colbert created three second-half opportunities.

"Very happy with getting a shutout against a team that's won a lot of games and scored a lot of goals," said Cornell women's soccer head coach Rob Ferguson. "We executed the defensive plan really well. I thought we had enough moments in the game where we did create the sort of chances we wanted to create and we've got to put them away. There's a disappointment that we didn't win, but on the balance of play in the middle third, I'm not sure it's an unfair result."
