SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A pair of goals 23 seconds apart early in the second half helped propel Syracuse (4-1-3) to a 3-0 victory over the Cornell women's soccer team (2-2-2) at a sun-soaked SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Gabby Wisbeck gave the Orange the lead in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a failed Cornell clearance inside the penalty area, chipping a shot over freshman goalkeeper
Samantha Qureshey. The goal ended Syracuse's scoring drought of nearly 220 minutes (219:38), dating back to its 1-1 draw with Quinnipiac on Aug. 28.
Syracuse doubled its advantage in the 55th minute when Anna Rupert followed her own rebound after beating a Cornell defender on a 1-on-1 ball sent from deep in the Orange's defensive zone. Just 23 seconds later, Mia Klammer converted a one-touch finish off a give-and-go with Maya McDermott.
Shea Vanderbosch made a pair of second-half saves to secure her third consecutive clean sheet and fourth solo shutout of the season.
Qureshey stopped a season-high eight shots in the setback for the Big Red, the most saves by a Cornell keeper in a single match since 2023. Junior forward
Sydney Allen (53') and senior midfielder
Tanum Nelson (62') generated the lone shots on goal for Cornell.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS FROM CORNELL WOMEN'S HEAD COACH ROB FERGUSON
"Today was tough. We knew we were limited in options and experience with 11 outfield players unavailable. We weren't good enough on either side of the ball. There was too much hesitancy in our decision making and in our self-belief to execute the plan. We have to regroup and focus in on Thursday at Providence. Everyone understands we need to find our standard again after these last two games."
