NEW YORK — The Cornell's men's squash team opened competition at the CSA Individual Championships on Friday with sophomore Youssef Sarhan earning the Big Red's only victory of the day, surviving a five-game battle with Tufts' Santiago Medina.

Sarhan won the first two games against Medina, 12-10, 11-6, before only registering eight points over the next two games. In the decisive fifth game, Sarhan was able to hold off Medina, 13-11, to advance to the round of 32, where he fell to top-seeded Tad Carney of Yale in straight games, 11-3, 11-7, 11-0.

Freshmen Aly Ezzat and Edward Thng both dropped their respective Pool Trophy round of 64 matches in straight games, while junior Syan Singh was forced to retire in his match against Drexel's Luhann Groenewald after dropping the second game.

All four Cornell players will continue competition on Saturday in their respective consolation and plate brackets. Sarhan will face Princeton's Federico Sosa in the Consolation Pool D quarterfinals at 1:20 p.m., while Ezzat, Singh and Thng will all compete in plate pool quarterfinals beginning at 11:40 a.m.
