ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Julia Ramsey broke Cornell's career assist record and junior goalkeeper Martha Broderick set a career high with 13 saves, but No. 9 Princeton's Pru Lindsey scored 3:17 into overtime to hand the Big Red a 2-1 loss on Friday evening at Marsha Dodson Field. The Tigers improved to 9-4 (4-1 Ivy), while the Big Red slipped to 5-7 (3-2 Ivy).
"I thought we played very well against a team, who in my opinion, is one of the best in the country," said head coach Andy Smith. "We executed a gameplan superbly and stuck to our process throughout the game. We scored the early goal and defended like we had planned. It was a tough way to lose, but we need to learn and come back stronger on Sunday. Also, congrats to Julia Ramsey who broke a long-standing record tonight and becomes the all-time assists leader at Cornell."
Ramsey's 41st career assist, on junior Uma Käding's first-quarter goal, moved her past Taylor Standiford '16, whose 40 she matched earlier this season. Käding put the Big Red ahead at 13:06 of the first quarter, finishing a direct shot off a penalty corner with assists from Ramsey and Rease Coleman, who maintained her Division I-leading 1.0 assist per game average. It was Käding's ninth goal of the season, and Cornell's only shot on goal in the game.
Princeton dominated the rest of the way, outshooting Cornell 26-2, putting 16 shots on goal to the Big Red's one, and earning 12 penalty corners to Cornell's two. Broderick kept the Tigers off the board for most of it, making one save in the first quarter, four in the second, five in the third and three in the fourth.
The biggest of Broderick's stops came at 39:56 of the third quarter, when the junior saved a penalty stroke from Anna Faulstich to preserve the 1-0 lead. Faulstich finished with 10 shots, eight of them on goal.
Princeton finally broke through at 47:10 of the fourth quarter, when Molly Nye redirected a pass into the circle from Reese Milone to tie the game at 1-1. Milone set up the winner as well, passing through the middle to Lindsey, who knocked it in for the game-winner at 63:17 of the extra period. Sophomore Sophia Grimm also had a defensive save for the Big Red as part of a fantastic defensive effort against the 2025 NCAA Tournament runner-up coming off a win over unbeaten and top-ranked Northwestern, the defending national champs.
Princeton goalkeeper Olivia Caponiti did not have to make a save in the win.
Cornell will close out its home slate when it meets No. 3 UConn on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at Marsha Dodson Field.
