Miles’ Goal Lifts No. 19 Cornell Past No. 23 Princeton, 1-0, Keeps Ivy Mark Perfect

PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman forward Andrew Miles scored in the 57th minute, and No. 19 Cornell men's soccer held off No. 23 Princeton 1-0 on Saturday at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium to stay perfect in Ivy League play.

The Big Red (8-3, 4-0-0 Ivy) improved to 4-0 in conference play. The Tigers fell to 6-3-4 overall and 1-2-1 in the Ivy League.

After a scoreless first half, Miles broke through at 56:41. Sophomore Calvin Momanyi had fired a shot five seconds earlier, and Miles finished from there for his second goal of the season. Senior midfielder Connor Miller picked up the assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Reuben Clarson made three saves to preserve the shutout. He turned aside two shots from Princeton's Bardia Hormozi, at 12:11 and 16:06, in the first half. He denied Julien Lacher in the 69th minute with the Big Red protecting its one-goal lead.

Princeton generated the bulk of the pressure after falling behind. The Tigers took seven second-half shots to Cornell's five and earned four corner kicks after the goal, but none produced an equalizer. Hormozi led all players with four shots, two on goal, and Lacher added three shots, one on goal. Tigers goalkeeper Andrew Samuels made two saves.

The teams finished with nearly identical numbers: Princeton outshot Cornell 12-11, and each side put three shots on goal. Cornell controlled the early going, taking all five of its corner kicks and six of its 11 shots in the first half. Cornell was called for 15 fouls to Princeton's 13, and Miles and freshman Lennon Harrington each drew a yellow card.

Cornell returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Bucknell. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
