Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy rushed for 301 yards and four touchdowns and scored on all six of its red-zone trips in a 41-3 win over Cornell sprint football on Friday afternoon.
The Midshipmen (4-1) scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and led 20-3 at halftime. The Big Red (2-3) finished with 131 total yards (85 rushing, 46 passing) and went 3-for-16 on third down, even though they held the ball longer, 30:30 to 29:30.
Cornell's best early chance came on a 16-play, 61-yard drive that took 8:14. Beck Berry appeared to cap it with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Lay, but an ineligible-man-downfield penalty wiped out the score. Miles Mariani's 31-yard field goal attempt then sailed wide right late in the first quarter.
The Big Red defense forced turnovers in the second quarter, with Jason Milo and Dan O'Malley each intercepting Navy quarterback Luke O'Connell. O'Malley's interception, returned 15 yards with 2:07 left in the half, set up Mariani's 40-yard field goal, which cut the deficit to 20-3 with 56 seconds left in the half. It was Cornell's first made field goal of the season.
Milo led Cornell with nine tackles, while Alex Triplett, Kruz Meier, Aaron Gellert, Ben Roerden, Thomas Shegogue and Brandon Tauscher each had seven. Tauscher blocked an extra-point attempt in the fourth quarter, and Triplett recovered a fumble on a punt return in the final minute.
Navy's Hunter Gennicks ran 13 times for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Broderick Freeman added 70 yards and a score on 11 carries. O'Connell completed eight of 17 passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns, to Philip Drexler and Biamungu Nkere.
In the third quarter, Cornell put together an 11-play, 40-yard drive that reached the Navy 33-yard line, but Berry fumbled and Navy recovered at its own 35 with 2:22 left in the period. In the fourth quarter, a fumble by Jaeden Park after a 6-yard reception gave Navy the ball at the Cornell 18, and Freddy Melton scored from 2 yards out four plays later.
Berry was 7-of-21 passing for 46 yards and rushed 12 times for 39 yards. Lay had 10 carries for 19 yards and two catches for 17, and Park caught three passes for 21 yards. Annapolis native Bobby Bilo, a freshman, punted six times for 205 yards, a 34.2 average.
Navy has won 17 straight in the series and leads it 64-13-2.
Cornell returns home next Friday, Oct. 30, to host Molloy University under the lights at 7 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
