PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Adam Schaban scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute, and Cornell men's soccer erased a first-half deficit to beat Brown 2-1 on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Big Red (6-2-0, 2-0-0 Ivy League) improved to 2-0 in conference play. Brown (4-3-1, 0-1-0 Ivy) dropped its league opener.
Brown struck first, just over three minutes in. Cornell goalkeeper Filip Versterre was shown a yellow card in the 3rd minute, and Brown's Mathias Hille converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. It was the only goal of a first half in which Cornell managed four shots to Brown's three.
Cornell took control after halftime, outshooting Brown 12-7 in the second half and 16-10 for the game.
Ashton Wray tied it in the 57th minute, finishing off an assist from Aidan Martin. Schaban put Cornell ahead in the 75th minute, scoring off a feed from Calvin Momanyi. It was his fourth goal of the season.
It was also the second time Schaban has scored a game-winner against Brown. His first came in the 88th minute at home on Senior Day last season.
Versterre made four saves, all in the second half, to preserve the lead, including stops on Brown's Lorenzo Amaral, Carlo Brown and James Snaith. Brown put five shots on goal to Cornell's five. Cornell also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Hille accounted for the Bears' lone goal and led them with three shots. Amaral also had three shots, two on goal.
Cornell returns home to face UMass on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
