HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Senior
Julia Ramsey tied the Cornell career assist record and Uma Käding scored twice as the Big Red field hockey team won its fourth straight game, beating Colgate 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field. Cornell improved to 5-4, while the Raiders slipped to 4-5.
Cornell controlled play from the opening whistle, building a 3-0 lead and a 14-1 shot advantage heading into the fourth quarter before Colgate scored twice in the final 15 minutes. The Big Red finished with a 19-4 edge in shots, and Colgate did not get its first shot until the third quarter.
"That's a great win for us today," said head coach Andy Smith. "The scoreline did not reflect the dominance of the game. We need to be better at putting balls in the goal when we have the opportunity."
Käding got Cornell on the board at 3:43, tapping in a rebound after Colgate goalkeeper Kennedy Glinn made two saves in succession. The junior doubled the lead 14 minutes later, smashing a penalty corner past a prone Glinn at 17:48 with
Rease Coleman on the stop and Ramsey on the insert.
Ramsey's assist was the 40th of her career, matching the school record held by Taylor Standiford '16. She also moved into 11th place in Cornell history with 64 career points. Coleman, who finished with two assists on the afternoon, jumped into the top five in that category with 25, good for fifth all-time.
Freshman
Gracie Buxton added insurance in the 41st minute, taking a feed from Coleman in the circle and finishing with a backhand blast for her first career score at 40:49 for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Emmy Horner also had an assist on the goal.
Colgate answered with a penalty-corner goal from Morgan Willis at 46:33 early in the fourth quarter, and added another from Ava Poliafico off a penalty corner with no time remaining, but it was too little, too late.
Senior
Martha Broderick earned the win in goal, the 24th of her career, which stands second in program history. She made a save on the only shot she faced in 45 minutes. Freshman
Claire Pausz played the fourth quarter in net for the Big Red. Glinn made seven saves in the first half for Colgate, and Marissa Buck added four in the second.
Cornell will hit the road to face No. 8 Harvard in a battle of Ivy unbeatens on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
