ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell freshman Jaxon Joy remains unbeaten in dual competition and earns his third Ivy League Wrestler of the Week honor of the season.
Joy, currently ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, improved to 21-0 in dual matches this year with a pair of victories over top-10 opponents during a dominant weekend on the road.
On Saturday at Princeton, Joy posted a 13-0 major decision over Eligh Rivera, controlling the bout from start to finish to secure bonus points. He followed with a 5-1 decision over Penn's Cross Wasilewski on Sunday, using a key takedown and riding time advantage to seal the win.
"In my matches, I feel like my offense has been clicking, and I have been wrestling stress-free," Joy said. "My mindset going into this year was to not focus on the results and solely focus on having fun and getting better each week."
The freshman said the transition to college wrestling presented early challenges, particularly in balancing academics and competition.
"As a freshman, it has been challenging at times to balance school and competing, but once I was able to get my system figured out, it became much easier," Joy said.
With the postseason approaching, Joy remains focused on staying present.
"I have found it important to enjoy the small things and focus on the task currently in front of me," he said.
"Jaxon wrestled really well against tough competition," said The David Dunlop '59 Head Coach of Wrestling, Mike Grey. "We're excited to see him keep building as we move to the postseason."
Joy has emerged as one of the nation's top wrestlers at 149 pounds in his rookie campaign, collecting three Ivy League Wrestler of the Week honors while being a key anchor in the Big Red lineup.
A graduate of Wadsworth High School in Wadsworth, Ohio, Joy was a four-year letterwinner and three-time state champion. Joy is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and is pursuing a major in global development.
