ITHACA, N.Y. — Four members of the Big Red wrestling program were named NCAA Division I Men's Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the organization announced following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships in March.
Senior Vince Cornella, junior Aiden Hanning, freshman Jaxon Joy and junior Meyer Shapiro were among 390 student-athletes from 73 institutions recognized for their academic success while competing throughout the collegiate wrestling season. The scholar awards are announced annually following the NCAA Division I Men's Wrestling Championships, held March 19-21.
Cornella, an Applied Economics and Management major, put together a standout senior season with a 21-3 record at 141 pounds. He won the Ivy League title as the No. 1 seed and earned a No. 6 seed at the NCAA Championships. Cornella also claimed the Southern Scuffle title as the No. 13 seed and recorded multiple ranked wins during the season, including victories over Virginia Tech's Tom Crook and NC State's Ryan Jack. He defeated two-time All-American CJ Composto of Penn three times during the season, including in the Ivy League finals.
Hanning, a junior in the SC Johnson College of Business, competed throughout the season and placed fourth at the Ivy League Championships while also earning All-Ivy Academic honors. Joy, a freshman majoring in Global Development, finished an impressive rookie campaign with a 26-3 overall record. He won the 149-pound title at the Ivy League Championships, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, earned Ivy League Athlete of the Week honors three times, won the Cliff Keen Invitational title and qualified for the NCAA Championships, where he posted a 2-2 record.
Shapiro, an Interdisciplinary Studies major, went 18-4 overall and placed second at the Ivy League Championships before finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors for the third time in his career. He was also named Ivy League Wrestler of the Year for the second consecutive season.
The NWCA Scholar All-American honor recognizes student-athletes who have demonstrated excellence both academically and athletically, highlighting some of the nation's top performers in the classroom and on the mat.
