ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's heavyweight rowing team travels to Gold River, Calif., this weekend for the IRA National Championship on Lake Natoma, with four entries across the 1V8+, 2V8+, 3V8+ and 1V4+. Each day of racing will be streamed live on Overnight, which requires a paid subscription.
The IRA National Championship returns to Lake Natoma for the fifth time and first since 2019, having previously been held at the venue in 2009, 2013 and 2017.
Cornell earned at-large bids for all three of its V8+ entries. The Big Red opens competition Friday, May 29, in the fourth of four 1V8+ heats at 11:40 a.m. ET (8:40 a.m. PT), facing Princeton, Stanford, Syracuse, La Salle and Navy. The 2V8+ follows in the second of four heats at 12:12 p.m. ET (9:12 a.m. PT), and the 3V8+ races in the third of four heats at 12:52 p.m. ET (9:52 a.m. PT). Cornell's 1V4+ will compete as one of 29 entries in the V4+ time trial beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. PT).
Saturday's heavyweight racing begins at 11:48 a.m. ET (8:48 a.m. PT) with the 1V8+ AB semifinals. The 1V4+ finals races are scheduled to begin at 1:32 p.m. ET (10:32 a.m. PT).
Sunday's finals begin at 11:50 a.m. ET (8:50 a.m. PT) with the 3V8+ 'D' Final.
Cornell enters with an eye on the Chapman Trophy, awarded to the team that records the highest year-over-year increase in Ten Eyck team points based on the combined finishing positions of its top three varsity eights. The Big Red claimed the Chapman Trophy (first awarded in 2004) in 2007 and will look to add to that total after posting a four-point improvement at Eastern Sprints — one of the stronger year-over-year gains in the field.
Cornell's program history at the IRA is among the richest in the country. The Big Red have an IRA-record 25 titles in the 1V8+ despite not winning since 1982. Cornell has also not won the Ten Eyck Trophy since 1981. The Big Red 2V8+ has 15 titles, second only to Washington's 32, and has not won the event since 1980. The 3V8+ has claimed 25 titles, also second to Washington's 30, with Cornell's last title coming in 1974. The program's lone 1V4+ title came in 1968.
