LEXINGTON, Ky. — Cornell men's outdoor track and field opened competition Wednesday at the NCAA East First Round at the University of Kentucky, with four Big Red athletes taking the national stage in a full day of competition.
Sophomore Peter Northrup led Cornell's efforts with appearances in both the hammer throw and shot put, while freshman Joe Seib and senior Noah Harman joined him in the shot put. Senior Ryder King rounded out the day competing in both hurdle events.
After fouling his opening two attempts in the hammer throw, Northrup responded with resilience, recording a mark of 62.88m to close out competition. The performance marked his second-best throw of the season.
Northrup later returned for the shot put, where he placed 30th overall with a best mark of 17.81m, also his second-best performance of the year in that event.
Seib and Harman joined Northrup in the shot put and both exceeded their projected finishes. Seib, a freshman competing in his first NCAA First Round meet, placed 35th with a throw of 17.53m after entering as the No. 48 seed. Harman climbed several spots as well, placing 36th with a mark of 17.41m after entering competition seeded 40th.
On the track, King competed in both hurdle events for the Big Red. The senior finished 37th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.17 before returning later in the day to place 28th in the 400m hurdles in 51.07.
Associate head coach Kevin Phipps praised the group's effort against one of the nation's toughest fields.
"Really proud of how this group competed after a great season," Phipps said. "Joe and Noah out performing their seeds in their first First Round was really impressive. Peter showed some great resilience in the hammer after fouling his first two throws."
