PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- No. 17 Cornell out-shot Pittsburgh and pressed for an equalizer deep into the second half, but the Big Red came up empty in front of the net and fell 2-0 to the Panthers on Tuesday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex.
Cornell (2-2-0) controlled the shot count for much of the match, finishing with a 13-8 edge overall, but a 13th-minute goal by Pittsburgh's Miguel Bertran -- set up by Mamadou Tall and Anders Bordoy -- put the Big Red in a hole they were unable to escape.
Blake Donahue led the Cornell attack, firing five shots and forcing Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jack Moxom into saves in the 29th, 54th and 70th minutes. Andrew Miles and Liam May also had late looks turned aside by Moxom as Cornell pushed for the equalizer, but the Big Red could not find the back of the net across either half.
Pittsburgh extended the lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute when Tall punched in a goal of his own, assisted by Bordoy and Cannon Scretchen, putting the result out of reach.
Moxom finished with five saves to preserve the shutout for Pittsburgh. Cornell goalkeeper Filip Versterre made one save in net.
Dominik Kolbl and Donahue picked up yellow cards for Cornell in the match, which also saw two Pittsburgh players carded.
The Big Red will look to bounce back in Kalamazoo, MI as they continue their season on the road this weekend.
