ITHACA, N.Y. -- Mansfield rolled to a 43-6 win over Cornell sprint football in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field, scoring the game's first 43 points behind five total touchdowns from quarterback Joseph Frye.

Mansfield led 17-0 after one quarter and 24-0 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter, finishing with 528 yards of total offense to Cornell's 80.

Cornell's lone points came with 3:26 remaining, when senior Stefano Luis found Andrew Lay for a 21-yard touchdown pass to cap a 10-play, 69-yard drive. The two-point conversion attempt failed on a fumbled run.

Cornell struggled to find rhythm offensively, managing just 42 rushing yards on 31 carries and 38 passing yards on 5-of-17 throwing between Luis and freshman Beck Berry, who was intercepted twice. The Big Red were held to nine first downs and converted just 4 of 12 third-down attempts, while Mansfield converted 8 of 13.

Defensively, junior Ben Roerden was a bright spot for Cornell, blocking two extra-point attempts to help limit the scoring damage. Kruz Meier added an interception and recovered a Mansfield fumble deep in Cornell territory late in the first quarter, though the Big Red offense couldn't capitalize. Linebacker Jason Milo led Cornell with 10 tackles.

Cornell will look to regroup next Saturday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Philadelphia to face Chestnut Hill College.
