Biography

As a senior (2019)

• Second team All-Ivy League pick at defensive back.
• Tied for second on the team with 58 tackles and sixth in the Ivy League with nine passes defended (two interceptions, seven pass breakups) to go along with 4.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble in 10 starts.
• Also the team's primary kickoff and punt returner.
• Named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after a season-opening win at Marist that saw him make five tackles, record 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception and three pass breakups.
• Had a team-high seven tackles at Ivy preseason favorite Yale.
• Notched four tackles and broke up a pass against Georgetown.
• Credited with five tackles and a pass breakup at Harvard.
• Notched seven tackles and a half-tackle for loss vs. Colgate.
• Recorded six tackles, including a sack, and broke up a pass in the win over Brown.
• Had eight tackles with a sack and forced a fumble against No. 12 Princeton.
• Notched three stops at Penn.
• Notched six tackles with an interception in the win over No. 12 Dartmouth.
• Credited with six tackles and a pass breakup in the season finale win over Columbia.
 

As a junior (2018)

• Named second team All-Ivy League at corner and to the honorable mention squad as a return specialist.
• Recorded 21 tackles, three interceptions, nine total passes defended and a blocked field goal in 10 starts.
• Averaged 20.2 yard on 20 kickoff returns with a long of 53 and two more called back that went for 75 yards or longer – as well as 7.8 yards per punt returns on 12 attempts.
• Led the Ivy League in kickoff return yards (498).
• Had six tackles and returned a pair of kickoffs for 72 yards against Yale.
• Posted two interceptions, including a 48-yard return for a touchdown, in earning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week in the win over Sacred Heart.
• Had a pass breakup and returned two kickoffs for 50 yards in the win over Harvard.
• Credited with four tackles and averaged 22.3 yards on four kickoff returns at No. 17 Colgate.
• Had two tackles and a pair of pass breakups, blocked a field goal and returned a kickoff 25 yards in the win at Brown.
• Intercepted a pass and made a pair of stop at No. 17 Princeton.

As a sophomore  (2017)

• Named honorable mention All-Ivy League at corner.
• Tied for Ivy League in interceptions (four, 23rd nationally), with all four picks coming in Ivy League games to pace the circuit.
• Saved his best for last, tying a school record for interceptions in a game (three) against Penn in the season finale.
• Despite only starting in half of the team's games, he was fourth in the conference in passes defended (nine - five pass breakups and four interceptions) and totaled 28 tackles.
• Also the team's primary kick returner, he ranked fourth in the conference in kick return average (22.4), the best mark at Cornell since 2013, and 48th nationally.
• Earned his first career start in the win over Brown, breaking up two passes.
• Had six tackles and a pass breakup in the win at Princeton.
• Made three tackles and intercepted his first career pass at Dartmouth.
• Was the team’s primary kick returned with four returns for 95 yards in the 2017 opener at Delaware, while making five tackles from his backup position at corner.
• Returned three kickoffs for 48 yards and had a tackle in the Ivy League opener at Yale.
• Made three tackles, broke up a pass and returned a pair of kickoffs for 58 yards against Colgate.
• Credited with five tackles against Bucknell.
• Posted a pair of tackles and a pass breakup while also averaging 23.0 yards on three kick returns against Columbia.
 

As a freshman (2016)

• Was a member of the junior varsity team as a freshman.
 

Prior to Cornell

• Jones was a three-time all-state defensive back at St. Thomas HS, including a first-team pick in 2015.
• A two-year captain, he was a four-time all-district pick on the defensive side of the ball.
• Was named the Ironman of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Houston.
• Helped his team to three consecutive district titles and a 40-7 record.
• Jones was a four-year starter in both football and basketball.
• Helped his track and field team to a state runner-up finish as a sprinter.

• David Jeffery Jones is the son of Jeff and Patricia Jones and has and older and younger brother.
• He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the SC Johnson College of Business.
