Biography

Senior Season - 2010
Stengel made a return from injury suffered in the summer of 2009 to reclaim a starting spot for the Big Red on the back line. He appeared in 13 games, starting 12 of those contests, and helped to anchor a defensive unit that allowed just 16 goals in 17 games. Stengel made his return from injury on Sept. 16 against Saint Joseph's and remained in the starting 11 for nearly the remainder of the season.

Junior Season - 2009
Stengel suffered an injury during the summer prior to his junior season and was forced to miss the entire 2009 campaign.

Sophomore Season - 2008
Stengel appeared in 15 games on the year, earning a start in eight of those games. He opened up the season with four straight starts before coming off the bench for seven of the next eight games. He closed out the year with three consecutive appearances in the starting lineup. Stengel picked up a point with an assist in the Big Red's 3-1 loss to Penn State on Oct. 15.

Freshman Season - 2007
Stengel made an immediate impact on the back line for the Big Red, appearing in 15 games and earning the starting nod in 13 contests. He recorded his first collegiate point by garnering an assist on Matt Bouraee's goal on Sept. 19 against Colgate. Stengel made his first start of his career on Sept. 7 against Albany in the Colgate Adidas Soccer Classic.

At Ocean HS
Stengel, a two-time second-team all-state honoree, also was twice named a first-team all-county and all-conference player while helping his high school team to a B-North Conference championship as a senior. Stengel played his club soccer with Vision FC, helping that squad to the semifinals of the N.J. State Cup in 2006. An outstanding student, he is a member of National Honor Society and won the Monmouth County Senior Excellence award while also serving as captain of his high school swim team.

Personal
Matt Stengel is the son of Ray and Patty Stengel, and he has an older sister and a younger brother. He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
