2008 Men's Cross Country Roster
Biography
At Cornell:
Following a rookie year in which he proved himself a gutsy runner unafraid of a punishing pace, Hine continued to improve steadily throughout his fall sophomore campaign. He established himself as the Big Red’s third runner in most meets, culminating with a 24th-place finish at Heps in a huge course PR of 25:19, a 44-second improvement from his 26:03 as a freshman. After struggling indoors with low iron, Hine emerged with a vengeance outdoors and was the revelation of the entire league in the distances. He opened eyes with an excellent 5,000 meters at Bucknell, clocking 14:14.22 to improve his PR by 34 seconds and become third all-time at Cornell. With hopes pinned on him for points at the outdoor Heps, Hine came through twice. On the first day, he made a big move to break open a slow-starting 10,000 with 7 laps remaining and wound up with a second-place finish, kicking off a fantastic weekend for the Big Red long distance corps, which was the dominant distance squad at the championships. Hine came back the following day to gut out a fourth place in the 5,000, completing the best 5k/10k double of the meet. At South Hadley: Hine was the Massachusetts Division II state cross-country champion as a senior with a time of 14:26 for 2.9 miles. In track, he was the state runner-up in the mile and posted a best mile time of 4:17.73 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Personal: Zachary John Hine is the son of John and Karen Hine and has a younger sister.
