2010-11 Men's Track and Field Roster
Biography
At Cornell
After transferring from Arkansas and finally getting to compete for Cornell in 2009, Jones got off to a slow start in the triple jump last year. The former high school All-American suffered through the typical aches and pains of being a collegiate triple jumper. He showed some glimpses of genius during the indoor season but was dejected to only finish 4th at the indoor HEPS and score at the IC4A’s both well below his ability and expectations. Great athletes bounce back from disappointment and Gary was no exception during the outdoor campaign. Getting better every week the power house Jones placed at Penn Relays and then bounded to 50’8 at the HEPS to complete the Cornell 1-2 sweep. The next week he scored again at the IC4A’s earning All-East recognition for the second time and followed that up with an 8th place finish in the Triple Jump at the NCAA Regionals narrowly missing a berth at the NCAA Finals. Jones completed his 2009 season at the USATF Nationals with a pr jump of 51’6 ½”. He’s still working on straightening out his Long Jump where he has a best of 23’7 ½”. Number 6 on the All-Time list at Cornell, Jones is dedicated to putting it all together for the 2010 year and has his sites set on first going over 16.00m and then scoring at the NCAA Championships in both March and again in June. He’s a dynamic leader in the weight room and will give a serious challenge to teammate Teixeira for the triple jump crown.
