Biography

At Cornell:

In 2007, Matos established herself as one of the top discus throwers in the country. In April, she placed seventh in the Championship of America discus at the Penn Relays. In May, she won her second Heps title in the discus and followed it up a week later with a second-place finish at the ECAC Championships. In June, Matos continued her good throwing as she took third in the NCAA East Region with a new school-record throw of 170’4, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships, where she finished 23rd. Indoors, she won her first Heps 20-pound weight title and improved to third all-time at Cornell. For Matos, 2007 was a fantastic year, but look for 2008 to be even better as she sets her sights on not only again qualifying for the NCAA Championships, but making the finals. At Klein Oak HS: Matos was ranked by Track and Field News as the top high school discus thrower in the country with her 166’5" until July, when a fellow Texan beat her by two inches. Her senior year was marked by a second place finish at the Texas State Championships and a berth on the Dominican Republic Pan Am Junior Team, where she finished fifth in the discus. As a junior, she won the state championships in the discus. Personal: Maria Matos is the daughter of Jose and Mayra Matos and has an older brother and sister.
