Biography
At Cornell
As a former High School All-American in the decathlon, the pressure to perform is always on during the freshman year where Alex felt the heat. As a sophomore he went after improving in all his events with abandon setting pr’s and moving up the All-Time top 10 list. An excellent thrower and solid sprinter, he was on his way to a big score in the Heptathlon at the Indoor HEPS when he was derailed by a no-height in the vault. He then showed the size of his heart by finishing the 1000m in a pr time to gain a valuable 5th place finish qualifying for the IC4A’s where only a week later he finished 8th to earn his first All-East award. At the outdoor HEPS Holcombe finished an excellent 3rd and then again the very next week finished 5th at the IC4A’s with a new pr of 6640 establishing a new Cornell School Record in the process. He’s become a solid vaulter at 14’ and his pr’s of 45’1 in the shot and 145’ in the discus and 4:28 1500m make him a candidate for possibly making the NCAA standard as a junior. Time will tell. Right now he sits in 2nd on the All-Time list in the Heptathlon in addition to his accomplishments in the Decathlon.
