Brennan was a two-sport athlete at The Lawrenceville School as a four-year member of the swimming team and a three-year member of the water polo team.

James Russell Brennan is the son of Jim and Alice Brennan and he has one younger brother, Christopher, who is a member of the cross country and track and field teams at Washington University in St. Louis. Brennan is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
