At Cornell
McDonnell had a solid rookie season with the Big Red, posting a 13-8 record (.619) on a deep and talented epee squad. She excelled during the postseason, finishing eighth at the NCAA Regionals with a 12-11 record and went on to place 21st at the NCAA tournament.

At Newmarket HS
McDonnell fenced for four years at Newmarket high school. As a member of the Cadet Canadian National team, she represented Canada at both the Junior and Senior World Cups in 2008 and 2009. She won a bronze medal in the senior division at the 2009 Provincial Fencing Championships after winning the bronze in the cadet group at the 2008 Canadian Fencing Championships

Personal
Adelaide Edith McDonnell is the daughter of Michael and Catherine McDonnell and she has two younger brothers and a younger sister. Both of her parents fenced at McMaster University. She is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
