At Cornell
2009-10: Metzler went 3-6 as a freshman in 2010, including opening his career with a pair of wins at the Binghamton Open. He also pinned Ryan Doyle of Columbia at the Body Bar Invitational. Metzler also wrestled at the Southern Scuffle.

Prior to Cornell
Metzler is a three-time New York state place winner and a two-time Section 6 champion. He was a five-time class A champion, and was a two-time NHSCA All-American. In 2007, he was the Far East Regional champion at 125 pounds. He was a three-year captain and finished his high school career with a 236-27 record. Metzler also played football and helped his lacrosse team to a Section 6 championship in 2008. He was a member of the Science Honor Society and was student council president.

Personal
Matthew Lee Metzler is the son of John and Susan Metzler. His sister, Laura, swims for Brockport. Majoring in biometry and statistics, he is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
