Biography
At Cornell
As a freshman in 2008, Freitas had a stellar indoor season that culminated in scoring at his first Heps and then smashing the freshman record in the 500m that had been set by Kippins the year before. He qualified for the IC4As in the 400m (49.10) and lowered the 500m record to 1:03.53 while also running a leg on the Heps championship 4x400m. He also split 1:54 on a 4x800m and was on the freshman record setting 4x400m relay. A foot injury dramatically slowed his progress in his signature event, the 400m hurdles, as he gradually dropped his time to 53.57 late in the season. During the outdoor season, he was constantly in injury management mode. His performances as a junior were just the tip of the iceberg as Freitas has exceptional potential and range.
As a senior, Frietas claimed third place in the 500-meter dash at the Indoor Heps, running in a time of 1:03.92 and scoring six points for Cornell. At that meet, he also ran the third leg of Cornell's second-place 4x400 relay to help pick up eight more points for the team. Cornell placed eighth at the 4x400 at the Indoor IC4As, and Freitas anchored that relay team to help score one point for the Big Red. Freitas took part in two relays at the Penn Relays, winning the 4x400 Heps race on the first day and then taking sixth in the IC4A 4x400 as well. At the outdoor Heps, he took sixth in the 400 hurdles and was the third leg of Cornell's winning 4x400 team.
Before Cornell
Freitas was the MVP of his team at Thayer Academy, where he holds six school records. He was a two-time team captain and was a four-time league and New England champion in the 300m hurdles. Freitas also won the 400m three times in the league and New England and claimed a pair of 110m hurdles titles, also both in the league and in New England. He also played soccer and was on the swimming team.
