Biography
At Cornell
Shang earned his first letter by appearing in 15 matches during the 2012-13 season, all from the bottom third of the lineup. He posted a 6-9 record, including a three-match winning streak Nov. 17-18 during the Cornell Round Robin. He then registered his first victory in Ivy League play on Jan. 13, defeating Brown's Charles Lebovitz in three games. Shang then posted back-to-back victories over George Washington's David Moxley and Hobart's Eric DeRose in the latter half of the campaign. Shang won both of his appearances in scoring matches during his freshman season. He debuted with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 victory over Hamilton's Walker Lourie at No. 9 on Jan. 22, 2012, then moved up a spot in the order to defeat Hobart's Willis Stephens, 11-3, 11-5, 11-7, in the teams' regular-season finale.
Prior to Cornell
Shang helped Brunswick to two top-four finishes in the U.S. High School National Championships in 2010 and 2011 and two New England team championships. He also competed for four years on the school's tennis teams, again winning two New England team championships. His senior year, he earned All-Fairchester Athletic Association honors for both tennis and squash.
Personal
Matthew Shang is the son of Paul and Jane Shang, and he has one younger sister. His grandfather, John Dawson, played professional baseball within the New York Yankees organization. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
