As a Senior (2012-13)
Karys completed her Cornell cross country career by serving as a team captain. She opened the year with a 26th-place showing at the Yellowjacket Invitational, and she took 33rd at the Paul Short Run's Open Race later in the month. She scored for the Big Red at the Princeton Invitational, finishing as the team's fifth runner and 34th overall. She concluded her Big Red career with a 36th-place showing at the Heptagonal Championships, helping the team win the league title for the second consecutive season. At the conclusion of the season, Karys was given the John Moakley Award for the senior who has done the most, the John Reif Award for overall excellence as well as the Carol Andersen Award for being a team captain. She did not compete during the track season.
As a Junior (2011-12)
Injury hampered Karys’ junior season, as she saw limited action, competing in only a few outdoor track events. She will be a cross country captain for her senior season. Still, she was given the John Reif Award for overall excellence.
As a Sophomore and Freshman (2010-11)
The 2011 Heps 10K Champion, Karys proved to be among the very best distance runners in the East and indeed the nation during her first two years at Cornell. In addition to breaking the 19-year-old school record in her very first attempt at the distance while winning the Heps 10K crown, Karys twice competed at the NCAA First Round meet in the 5000 meters, an event in which she is in the all-time top six for Cornell both indoors and outdoors. A Heps scorer on the track every time she has lined up for the Big Red, Karys is also the school freshman record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor 3000 meters, an event in which she has twice finished fourth in the Championship race at the Penn Relays. Twice the recipient of the team’s Most Valuable Distance Runner and twice an All-East honoree in track, Karys is in the school top 10 list in the 3000, 5000 and 10K. Despite battling anemia during the fall of 2010 as a sophomore, she was in the Big Red’s top five throughout the cross country season and came on strong at the end of the season to earn her first career All-Region honors as a harrier. Named to the 2011 Spring Academic All-Ivy team, Karys represented the Big Red on the team’s 2010 trip to the United Kingdom, where she set a TransAtlantic Series record in winning the 5000 against Oxford and Cambridge. She is also a member of the Red Key Athletic Honorary Society.
Before Cornell
The Nike Northeast Regional cross country champion, Karys led off Newton South’s indoor and outdoor national championship 4xMile relays. One of the top distance runners in Massachusetts throughout her high school career, she has PRs of 4:59 for the mile and 10:48 for 2 miles.
