As a Junior (2012-13)
Groves was one of the Big Red's top runners during his junior season, placing third among Cornell runners and 37th overall at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Earlier at the Heptagonal Championships, Groves placed 11th overall and second among Big Red runners, earning himself a Second Team All-Ivy nod. Earlier in the year, Groves placed sixth at the season-opening Army-Binghamton tri-meet, fourth overall at the Yellowjacket Invitational, 20th at the Paul Short Run and an impressive first among Cornell runners at the Wisconsin Invitational. At the conclusion of the season, Groves was named a captain for the 2013 year.

On the track, Groves competed at the Indoor ECACs, running the 3K and taking 32nd place in 8:36.34. Groves also went to the Penn Relays, running the College section of the 5K and finishing 25th. His last race of the year came at the Outdoor Heps where he finished 14th in the 10K. He had career bests in the mile, 3K and 10K during the season.

As a Sophomore (2011-12)
No longer an unknown walk-on, Groves became one of the Big Red's top cross country runners as a sophomore. He began the year by winning the  Army-Binghamton tri-meet, taking third at the Colgate Invitational and followed that by closing out the team's scoring in the Paul Short Invitational. Groves then retook the team lead at the Princeton Invitational when he finished fourth overall, and he was the third-best Cornell runner (26th overall) at the Heptagonal Championships. Groves ended his year in 43rd place at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. For his efforts all year, Groves was named Cornell's most improved runner.

On the track, Groves took part in the 3K run at the Indoor IC4As, placing 14th in a time of 8:23.66. He also ran the anchor leg of Cornell's distance medley relay at that meet, helping Cornell take 22nd place. At the Penn Relays outdoors, Groves ran 13th place in the Championship 5K in a time of 14:15.72, which was the seventh-best time in school history. At the Outdoor Heps, Groves ran 11th place in the 5K and 13th place in the 10K to conclude his season.

As a Freshman (2010-11)
Groves walked on to the cross country team as a freshman and consistently ran just outside the top 12. He just missed qualifying for the Heptagonal Championships. He comes back as a sophomore to improve on his consistent performance.

Before Cornell
Groves ran varsity indoor and outdoor track from eighth through 12th grade. He boasted personal records of 1:57.3 in the 800, 4:25 in the 1600 and 9:26 in the 3200.
