As a Senior (2012-13)
Murphy competed for the Big Red in 10 meets during his senior season, posting a seasonal best of 47' 7 3/4" in the shot put at the Binghamton-Buffalo tri-meet.
As a Sophomore (2010-11)
Murphy’s sophomore fall was full of experimentation with new technique in the throws and a new lifting regimen in attempts to pick up where his last season’s gains left off. However, a promising early season lead way to a thoroughly frustrating season-long plateau. The regress in the glide technique lead way to attempts at the rotational and eventually to a pursuit of the discus, which both show promise and give hope for a successful two-year campaign to finish out his Cornell Career.
As a Freshman (2009-10)
Murphy came into Cornell without ever having the benefit of an off-season to train, and as a result, he became well acquainted with the Track Center’s Weight Room over the first few months of his school year. Because of this, Murphy’s freshman year was marked with steep gains in the weight room that translated gradually into improvements in his glide shot put throw. He arrived at Cornell largely as a one trick thrower, but has made strides to navigate the other throws with mixed success over the past two years. The summer after his freshman year, Murphy’s training was swiftly truncated by a necessary surgery to repair an abdominal hernia.
Before Cornell
Murphy earned six letters in track and field, helping his team to a state championship as a senior in 2009. He was a part of four straight shot put relay championship teams and twice was named all-scholastic for outdoor track and once for indoor track. He also played four seasons of football, earning three letters and winning a state championship as a senior.
