Biography

At Cornell
Senior (2013-14): As a senior, Whitney ranked third the foil squad with a record of 50-14 (8-7 Ivy League), winning 78 percent of her bouts. She took 11th at the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional and just missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship.

Junior (2012-13): Whitney earned the team's Cointe Award, given to the fencer who shows great sportsmanship throughout the season, given in honor of Coach Cointe. After spending the fall season abroad, Whitney finished the spring season with a 25-11 record overall, including a mark of 9-9 in the Ivy League. She went a perfect 3-0 against Duke, Drew, North Carolina and Johns Hopkins. Whitney also posted a winning record against Temple, Northwestern, Harvard Princeton, Brown and Yale. She placed 12th overall at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional and earned an invitation to her third consecutive NCAA championship, where she finished 17th. Whitney, picked up nine total victories at NCAAs, which included four upsets as she defeated  her teammate Angelica Gangemi, as well as Princeton's Eve Levin (10th place), St. John's Evgeniya Kirpicheva (12th place) and Ohio State's Mai Shaito (16th place).

Sophomore (2011-12): Whitney was named the team's MVP following a sophomore season in which she posted a 41-16 record overall and a mark of 9-7 in the Ivy League in the foil. She took the bronze medal at the NCAA Regional tournament and then concluded the year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA championship tournament, posting a record of 11-12 in individual bouts and a -6 touch differential. She picked up wins over three of the top seven finishers in the country, including semifinalist Luona Wang of Penn who was fourth. She also topped Dayana Sarkisova of Northwestern (sixth) and Yale's Lauren Miller (seventh).

Freshman (2010-11): Whitney had an outstanding rookie season, posting the second most wins on the team (36) and the third best winning percentage (72 percent). She finished the year with a mark of 36-14 overall and 10-8 in the Ivy League, going a perfect 3-0 against Penn and 2-1 vs. both Brown and Yale. Whitney went on to place 10th at the NCAA Regionals with a record of 13-10, earning a trip to the NCAA tournament, where she placed 18th overall with a record of 8-15.

Prior to Cornell
Whitney fenced for nine years at The Masters School and three years at the Fencers Club before joining Empire United Fencing in 2007. She enters Cornell as the 22nd ranked junior foil in the nation by the USFA and is the 77th ranked junior foil by the Federation Internationale D’Escrime. Whitney has had many top-20 performances at various national and international competitions, highlighted by placing sixth in the women’s foil at the 2009-10 Junior World Cup after taking seventh at the 2008-09 Division IA Summer Nationals. During the 2008-09 season, she helped the junior women’s foil team to a gold medal at the Summer Nationals, before helping the senior women’s foil team to a silver medal.

Personal
April Victoria Whitney is the daughter of Kathleen and Walter Whitney and she has one older sister. Her cousin Stephanie Gore played both soccer and lacrosse for Birmingham-Southern College and her great-uncle Joseph Gore '42 attended Cornell and fenced for the men's program. She is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
