Biography

At Cornell
Gangemi is the Cornell fencing program's first four-time NCAA qualifier on the strip, placing in the top 25 nationally in each of her four seasons, with a high finish of 13th as a senior. She also finished 14th as a freshman, 16th as a sophomore and 24th as a junior. Overall, she won nearly 78 percent of her collegiate bouts, finishing her career with a combined 205-59 record.

A second-team All-Ivy selection as a senior after finishing fourth at the Ivy championships and 10th at the NCAA regionals, Gangemi posted a 53-12 record in her final campaign. As a junior, Gangemi won the gold medal at the 2014 Temple Open and finished the season with a record of 45-19, winning 70 percent of her bouts. She took 13th in the foil competition at the NCAA Northeast Regional to qualify for her third consecutive NCAA Championship, where she won four bouts to place 24th overall.

Gangemi finished her sophomore season with a 52-17 record overall, including winning 21-straight bouts to open the season. She placed ninth overall in the foil competition at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Gangemi made her second NCAA tournament appearance where she finished in 16th place and earned 10 victories overall at NCAAs, including a top 10 win over St. John's Irene Spezzamonte. She was awarded the team’s Outstanding Achievement/MVP Award after finishing a successful rookie season, leading a deep and talented foil squad with a record of 55-11 overall.  After entering the competition as the 11th seed, she had the highest finish of any Big Red fencer at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional, taking sixth overall. She then placed 14th at the NCAA championship, earning 11 victories, including upset wins over Princeton's Ambika Singh and Yale's Lauren Miller.

Gangemi was one of the Big Red's most proficient foil fencers since arriving on East Hill. She is well respected in the fencing community for her excellence in technical and tactical knowledge, physical endurance and character. She was selected this past summer to represent the United States at the World University Games, held in Gwangju, South Korea, where she finished 43rd overall in the women's foil competition.

Academically, Gangemi is an outstanding student, carrying a 3.74 grade point average while majoring in Spanish with a minor in Latin American Studies. She has already been accepted to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School for matriculation in fall 2016 and intends to specialize in either pediatrics or anesthesiology. Gangemi is the lead undergraduate research assistant in the Cornell Infant Studies Lab, where she investigates the relationship between spatial language exposure and the development of spatial skills in children.

As impressive as she was on the strip, she was an even greater student leader off it. Gangemi is active in school and community activities, service projects, and served as the co-president of SAAC. She is also a member of the Red Key Society, Cornell's honor society for varsity athletes, and serves as the club's Big Brother/Big Sister Chair. Gangemi is also involved in Big Red Buddies, serving as a weekly volunteer in one of the toddler classrooms at the Cornell Child Care Center. She is a mentor for the Cornell Filipino Association, as well as a member of the Big Red Leadership Institute.

Prior to Cornell
Gangemi competed eight years for Fencers’ Club NYC. She placed in the top 16 at both the 2010 Junior Olympics and 2010 Summer Nationals in the Cadet Foil competition, as well as in the top 32 at the 2009 North American Cup in Division I Women’s Foil and the 2010 Junior Olympics. Her accomplishments also include a gold medal at the 2011 Division 1A Women’s Foil Summer Nationals Qualifier, a silver medal in the 2011 Senior Women’s Foil Open at Gutovsky Fencing, and a bronze at the 2008 Junior Women’s Foil World Cup.
