Biography

Sophomore Season -- 2012-13
Sunderland made an immediate impact upon his mid-season arrival, posting a 7-4 record while immediately finding a home in the middle of the lineup. He climbed to the No. 4 spot by the end of the season and qualified for the Pool Division of the College Squash Assocation's National Championships, where he was ousted by the defending champion, Harvard's Ali Farag.

Prior to Cornell
Sunderland was ranked 11th in New Zealand's senior rankings in 2012 after a stellar junior career. He was the Under-19 Men's South Island Champion in 2010, then the Under-19 North Island Champion the following year. He also finished third in the New Zealand Junior Nationals in 2010. Additionally, Sunderland competed in the 2010 World Junior Men's Championship in Ecuador, helping New Zealand to a sixth-place finish.

Personal
Michael John Sunderland is the son of Joy Dowling, and he has an older sister. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
