Biography
At Cornell
For the second year in a row, Barakat rowed in the third varsity eight boat that took the bronze medal at the 2014 Eastern Sprints. As a sophomore, Barakat rowed in the third varsity eight that took the silver medal at the 2013 EARC Sprints. Barakat rowed as a member of the freshmen eight during his rookie season. He helped the crew to a fourth place finish at the 2012 EARC Sprints. During the regular season, the freshmen eight earned victories over Penn, MIT, Columbia and Dartmouth.
Prior to Cornell
Barakat was an eight-time letter winner at Chaminade HS, winning two New York State championships, one in junior eight and the other in second varsity eight, and a Philadelphia City Championship in second varsity eight, as well as placing first in second varsity eight at the 2011 SRRA Nationals. He also placed second in the 2010 Stotesbury Cup junior eight and SRRA Nationals, second in the 2010 Philadelphia City Championship junior eight, and third in the 2011 Stotesbury Cup second varsity eight.
Personal
Richard Riyad Barakat, Jr. is the son of Richard and Catherine Barakat and has one older sister and one younger brother. He is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences
