Biography
As a senior (2018-19)
• Competed in five regattas as a senior.
• Raced on the third Varsity eight boat for the majority of the season, including competitions against Navy with Syracuse (Stagg Trophy), Yale with Princeton, and Penn with Georgetown (James Wray Memorial Trophy).
• Rowed on the fourth Varsity eight boat at the 2019 EARC Sprints where the team finished third in the Petite Final and ninth overall.
As a junior (2017-18)
• Rowed in both the third and fourth varsity eight during the 2017-18 season.
• Helped the fourth varsity eight to victory in the Petite Final at the 2018 EARC Sprints to take seventh place finish overall.
As a sophomore (2016-17)
• Split time as a member of the third varsity eight and fourth varsity eight throughout his sophomore season.
• Helped the third varsity eight to a victory over Penn.
As a freshman (2015-16)
• Helped the third varsity eight to wins over Syracuse and Navy in a battle for the Stagg Points Plate, before rowing with the second varsity eight to victory over Penn and Dartmouth for the James Wray Memorial Trophy.
• Rowed in the third varsity eight that finished fourth at the 2016 Eastern Sprints, missing out on a bronze medal by three-tenths of a second.
• At the 2016 IRA National Championship, he helped the second varsity eight to a second place finish in the Petite Finals to take eighth place overall.
• Rowed in the Cornell eight that advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Temple Challenge Cup at the 177th edition of the Henley Royal Regatta.
Prior to Cornell
• Member of the 2014 USRowing Junior National Team Worlds Development Team.
• Rowed for Mercer Junior Rowing Club, serving as team captain for the 2014-15 season.
• As a member of MJRC’s varsity eight crew, Abilheira won the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship in 2014, before taking the silver medal in 2015.
• Also won the 2015 Mercer Sprints Champions after taking bronze in 2014.
• Abilheira was a two time Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta champion (2013, 2014) and also won the 2014 Navy Day Regatta.
• Picked up a silver medal at both the 2013 and 2014 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, as well as both the 2013 and 2014 Saratoga Invitational Regatta.
• Also earned one varsity in football at Princeton High School.
Personal
• Elias Sean Abilheira is the son of Elias and Mariola Abilheira.
• His father was a member of the Princeton track and field team from 1984-88, while three of his uncles – Manual Abilheira (URI), Anthony Abilheira (URI), and Mark Opdyke (UNH) – played football in college.
• Another uncle, Kenny Robinson, played lacrosse at the Naval Academy, while his cousin Gregory Abilheira, played football for Boston College.
• Enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
