As a Senior (2016-17)
Winkler had a historic senior season for the Big Red becoming the NCAA Division I Champion in the hammer throw following a toss of 243’ 2”. He won seven collegiate track and field meets including the weight throw at the Ivy League Indoor Track and Field Championships and the hammer throw at the Outdoor Heps. His toss of 76’ 6 1/4” in the weight throw at the Sykes and Sabock Challenge reset the school record. Additionally, Winkler was fourth in the weight throw at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships with a mark of 73’ 2”. During the summer, he competed at the USATF Championships, placing fourth in the hammer (234’ 4”) and 31st at the IAAF World Championships (226’ 0”).
As a Junior (2015-16)
Winkler finished his junior season by winning the 2016 United States Olympic Trials with a heave of 251’10” and competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he finished 18th. Collegiately, he was the national runner-up in the hammer throw and earned All-America honors for the second straight year and. Winkler, the Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year, also won the hammer throw at the Ivy League Championships by over 25 feet (246’5”) and was named First Team All-Ivy and MVP of Field Events. Indoors, he took the weight throw title at Heps - and was named First Team All-Ivy - and advanced to the NCAA Championships, where he finished 10th and earned first-team All-American status. He also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic and Academic All-Ivy Honors.
As a Sophomore (2014-15)
Winkler’s outstanding performance as a thrower earned him First Team All-American honors in what was his freshman year of eligibility. He placed eighth overall in NCAA Championships in the hammer, and a few days later, broke the school record he had set at the NCAAs with a throw of 230 feet, 10 inches at the Amity Throwers meet. Winkler was also the only Ivy League athlete who qualified to compete in the hammer throw at the prestigious USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships. He was also the outdoor Ivy League champion in the hammer with a 218’ throw and took the league’s indoor title in the weight, with a throw of 68’ 0.5”, another school record. He was named MVP of the field events at the league’s indoor championships. In addition to his stellar year in the field, he also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic and Academic All-Ivy honors.
As a Freshman (2013-14)
Winkler participated in two weight throw events in his debut campaign. He took 1
st place in the weight throw with a toss of 60’ 7.75” at the Greg Page Relays. His other competition came at the Armory Collegiate Invitational where he took 11
th place with a season best throw of 61’ 3.5”.
