Biography

• First-Team All-Ivy (2017)

As a senior (2018-19)

• Rowed in the first varsity eight boat during his senior year.
• Guided the Big Red to its eighth IRA National Championship, and the team’s fourth national championship in the last five years. 
• With the win, became a two-time National Champion.
• Member of the first Varsity eight boat that was named the 2019 IRA Lightweight Crew of the Year.
• Rowed in the first varsity eight boat at the EARC Sprints.
• Led Cornell to its 25th Matthews Trophy.
• Helped the Big Red win the Geiger Cup, Platt Cup, and Harriet Trophy.

As a junior (2017-18)

• Rowed in the varsity eight for the first three races of his junior season.
• Led the crew to victories over Penn and MIT.

As a sophomore (2016-17)
• Consistently rowed with the varsity eight that won the 2017 IRA National Championships and captured an undefeated season in 2017.
• Member of the varsity eight that was named the EARC Lightweight Crew of the Year following the season.
• Rowed the Big Red to its 11th Ivy League Championship at the 2017 EARC Sprints.
• Also named first-team All-Ivy by virtue of winning the Ivy League.

As a freshman (2015-16) 
• Rowed in the third varsity eight that took the silver medal at the 2016 Eastern Sprints.
• Helped the crew earn the Leonard Cup with a win over Penn and Harvard, as well as posting victories over Yale, Columbia, MIT, and Dartmouth.
• Also rowed in the varsity 4+ that took third in the Petite Final, good for eighth overall at the IRA National Championship.
• Rowed in the Cornell lightweight eight that won its qualifying round to earn a spot in the Temple Challenge Cup at the 177th edition of the Henley Royal Regatta.

Prior to Cornell
• Rowed with the Cascadilla Boat Club, where he was a three-time winner of the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association Scholar Athlete award, and twice took home the Most Dedicated Rower award.
• Chosen to attend the 2015 Junior National Team Selection Camp after taking first in the men’s senior pair at the 2015 New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships and second in the Petite Finals of the men’s 4+ at the 2015 Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships.
• At the 2014 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta, Ellis won gold medals in in the men’s U19 single and pair.
• In his career, he also won gold medals at the men’s junior pair at the 2013 Cromwell Cup Regatta, the men’s junior single at the 2014 Cromwell Cup Regatta, and the men’s youth pair at the 2014 Head of the Fish Regatta.
• Ellis also earned silver medals in the men’s senior pair at the 2014 New York State Scholastic Rowing Association Championships an in the men’s youth pair at the Head of the Charles Regatta.
 
Personal
• Henry Newbold Ellis is the son of Joe and Elizabeth Ellis and he has one younger brother.
• Enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
