Biography
As a sophomore (2019-20)
• Member of the Big Red’s lightweight four at the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta, helping the boat place sixth among 16 boats in 16:18.277.
• Helped the lightweight varsity eight secure a second place finish in Flight 1 at the Princeton Chase, posting a time of 13:14.933.
• Member of the Cornell A 8+ boat that finished as the runner-up in Flight 2 at the Cornell Autumn Classic with a mark of 11:03.56.
• Spring 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19.
As a freshman (2018-19)
• Rowed on the second varsity eight during his freshman year.
• Led the second varsity eight to a gold medal at the EARC Sprints with a time of 6:42.95.
• Won the Petite Final with the varsity 4- at the IRA National Championship.
• Guided the second varsity eight to victories over Dartmouth, Princeton, and Columbia.
Prior to Cornell
• Spent five years with the Westerville Crew Rowing Club.
• Served as the team captain in 2017-18.
• Was a lightweight stroke for Westerville’s heavyweight men’s A boats in the 8+, 4+, and 4x from 2014 to 2018.
• Holds the second fastest lightweight Erg in Westerville Crew history.
• Placed first in the heavyweight division, as a lightweight, at the 2018 Midwest Erg Championships.
• Earned seven varsity letters.
• Received the 2018 Distinguished Athlete award from the United States Marine Corps.
Personal
• Zacharia A. Thurston is the son of Jayson and Yasmin Thurston and he has one brother.
• Enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
