Biography
As a sophomore (2019-20)
• Competed in all nine meets for Cornell as a sophomore, including the Ivy League Championships.
• Raced in the 200-IM, 400-IM, and 200-backstroke at Ivies, scoring points in all three events.
• Placed 12th in the 200-IM at the conference meet with the third-fastest time in Cornell history (1:47.26).
• Finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in the 400-IM and 200-backstroke at Ivies, notching a season-best in the 200-backstroke (1:47.17).
• Swam on the school record-breaking 800-freestyle relay team at the conference meet, helping the group finish sixth with the fastest time in Cornell history (6:31.25).
• Placed second in both the 200-IM (1:49.03) and 400-IM (3:53.59) at Akron’s Zippy Invitational, with his 400-IM mark ranking sixth all-time in the Big Red record books.
• Captured seven top-three finishes in his individual events during the dual meet season.
• Excelled in an Ivy League dual against Yale, placing second in the 200-freestyle in a season-best 1:40.23, second in the 200-IM, and third in the 100-freestyle.
• Notched a pair of top-three finishes in the 200-freestyle and 200-backstroke against Columbia.
• Won the 400-IM in Cornell’s dual meet victory over Binghamton.
As a freshman (2018-19)
• Made an immediate impact as a freshman, posting top 10 Cornell times in the 200 back and both the 200 and 400 IM races.
• Is fourth all-time in the 400 IM (3:54.34) and No. 8 in both the 200 back (1:47.15) and the 200 IM (1:49.57)
• Took 11th in the 200 back at the Ivy League Championships and finished 18th in the 400 IM.
• Won the 200 IM at the Ithaca Bomber Winter Invitational to go along with third-place efforts in the 200 back and 400 IM.
• Won the 200 back and finished second in the 200 IM vs. Yale.
• Also won dual meet races in the 400 against St. Bonaventure and took second in the 200 IM against both Columbia and Brown.
Prior to Cornell
• Martinez was a two-time NISCA All-American while attending Osceola Fundamental HS.
• State champion in the 200 IM.
• Qualified for the U.S. Open in both the 200 back and 200 IM.
• Qualified for Junior Nationals in six events.
• Earned a spot at the state championships in all four varsity seasons of high school.
• Twice named to the U.S.A. Swimming Scholastic All-America team.
• Swam club for Clearwater Aquatic.
Personal
• Ricardo John Martinez is the son of Ray and Amy Martinez and has an older brother and younger sister.
• His grandfather, John Ellerson, played football at Army West Point.
• He is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
