Except for the World War I years, Cornell has had a golf team in competition against other colleges since 1910. For many years it was a pick-up team, paying its own expenses and making its own team rules as it went. George Hall became the University's first director of the golf program in 1934.

The first nine holes on the University Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones '30, opened April 15, 1941; another nine holes opened in 1954. Cornell's first intercollegiate match on the new course was May 14, 1941 vs. Syracuse. Prior to 1941, matches were played at the Country Club of Ithaca. The course was renamed "The Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University" on September 28, 1991.

Prior to 1975, the Ivy League golf championship was determined by performance in the Eastern Intercollegiate Tournament.

Beginning in 1975, the Ivy League tournament has been the event used to determine the league champion.

Hall's high PGA connections permitted him to quickly elevate the level of play at Cornell, transforming the team into a competitive force to be reckoned with a career record of 163-112-8. His teams consistently played well in the Eastern Championships, highlighted by a 1946 tournament win.
