Team Faculty Liaison (TFL) Program

The strategic appointment of Team Faculty Liaisons (TFLs) for each of the 37 varsity sports programs at Cornell University plays a pivotal role in fostering a dynamic synergy between student-athletes and the esteemed faculty. These TFLs serve as dedicated advocates for their respective sports, bridging the gap between athletic pursuits and academic excellence.

The TFLs operate as vital liaisons, facilitating direct connections with faculty members who possess diverse expertise. Their mission extends beyond immediate support; they actively cultivate relationships that address both short-term needs and long-term aspirations. Recognizing the unique requirements of each team and individual, TFLs tailor their approach to ensure that student-athletes receive personalized guidance.

Moreover, TFLs contribute to a broader network of support. Leveraging their academic or professional backgrounds, they may extend assistance to student-athletes from different teams, creating a collaborative environment that transcends sport-specific boundaries. Through these multifaceted interactions, TFLs enhance the holistic student-athlete experience, reinforcing the symbiotic relationship between athletic achievement and intellectual growth.

General guidelines and purpose of the TFL Program may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide student-athletes with an additional opportunity to receive faculty mentoring.
  • Strengthen the relationship between student-athletes, professors, and coaches beyond the classroom.
  • Act as a liaison leading to a broader network of faculty by identifying faculty members who can act as resources for team members that have common interests or areas of expertise.
  • Assist in directing student-athletes to available campus resources, including their college faculty advisor, or advising dean, the Associate Director of Student Athlete Support Services, or resources such as:
    • Learning Strategies Center
    • Cornell Career Services
    • Cornell Health
    • Student Disability Services
    • Dean of Students – Identity Resource Centers
    • Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI)
  • Promote cooperation between intercollegiate athletics and the Cornell faculty.
  • Provide academic and career counseling when appropriate
