Tranquada led the foil squad with an exceptional performance at the 2009 IFA championships, finishing seventh overall with a record of 12-9. In the final round of the IFAs, Tranquada pulled off an impressive upset as she defeated two-time World Champion Emily Cross of Harvard, earning the 5-3 victory and handing Cross her only loss in 22 bouts on the day. Tranquada went on to finish 20th at the NCAA championships with seven victories. Once again, she earned the most impressive win of the tournament for the Big Red with a 5-3 victory over eventual national runner-up Hayely Reese (Notre Dame). After suffering an early-season injury during her rookie year, Tranquada came on strong down the stretch, going 19-10 overall (.655) and 9-9 in Ivy League competition. She led the foil squad to an eighth place finish at the IFA championships after going 5-6 to finish sixth in the A division. She went on to take eighth overall at the NCAA regionals and earned a trip to the NCAA championships, where she went 6-3 on the second day of competition to jump up four spots in the final standings and finish 16th overall. Two of her victories at the NCAA championships were upsets, beating the 10th and 12th ranked fencers at the competition.
