Dick Hardy

Biography

He was a three-year letterman as a sprinter for the Cornell track team. In 1932, he won the 100-yard dash at the Penn Relays and placed third in the IC4A 100, thus qualifying him for the 1932 Olympic Trials. Against national competition, he placed sixth in the 100 at the trials in which the first five finishers were selected for the U.S. team. As a junior, Hardy captured another Penn Relays 100-yard dash title and won the IC4A 100 crown, going undefeated at 100 yards outdoors. He ended this outstanding year as a gold and silver medalist on the sprint relay teams at the National AAU championships at the Chicago Worlds Fair. In his final year as captain of the team, he placed fourth in the IC4A indoor and outdoor springs and was second in the Penn Relay 100 meters. He was on the 400-meter relay that won AAU silver medals. After graduation, he had a distinguished career at Chase Manhattan Bank and at GTE, where he formed the General Telephone Credit Company and became vice president and treasurer of the parent GTE corporation.
