Erik Bernstein

Biography

He was a three-year letterman in both football and track. He became the first punted in Cornell history to received the football team[apos]s Pop Warner Most Valuable Player Award, after averaging 39.7 yards per punt and leading the Ivy League in punting (38.8) in 1986. He was a first-team All-Ivy and All-Eastern College Athletic Conference selection and received Associated Press Division I-AA honorable mention. He also garnered All-Ivy honorable mention in 1985. Over his three-year career, Bernstein amassed 6,154 yards on 161 punts for an average of 38.2. In track, he was a specialist in the javelin throw, setting the Cornell record in that event (230-1) in 1986. He placed fifth in the javelin at the outdoor Heptagonal track championships in 1984 and was sixth in 1985, when Cornell won the team title. A co-captain in 1986-87, he was the recipient of team awards as the best thrower and most improved field event man as a junior. Bernstein is a native of Lincroft, N.J., and he graduated from Middletown South High School, where he was an all-county and All-Jersey Shore punter and place-kicker.
