Jack Warner

Biography

He was men[apos]s cross country and track coach at Cornell from 1967 until his retirement in 1990. He was also head coach of the women[apos]s program from 1982-90. Warner had a combined cross country and track record of 276-151-4. He coached three Olympians, 24 All-Americans, 38 All-East, 12 IC4A and ECAC champs and 91 Heptagonal champions. His men[apos]s teams won four Heps championships, winning indoor titles in 1977 and 1978 and outdoor crowns in 1978 and 1985. Warner was named NCAA Division I District II Men[apos]s Track Coach of the Year in 1978, and was honored as NCAA District II Women[apos]s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1983. He instilled a family-like atmosphere into his program and his efforts had tremendous affects on a number of outstanding athletes, including Jon Anderson [apos]71, who won the 1973 Boston Marathon and competed in the 10,000 meters on the U.S. Olympic team; and Pete Pfitzinger [apos]79, the 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon trials champion and a member of the U.S. team in 1988. Warner received his B.A. degree from Syracuse University in 1951, and in 1988 he was named a Letter Winner of Distinction by Syracuse, where he was voted the most valuable runner of the 1949 NAAU championship cross country team and was captain of the 1950 squad. Warner was an NCAA representative on the governing council of the USTFF, vice president and president of the IC4A Track Coaches Association, and a member of 1980 Olympic Development Committee. A native of Rome, N.Y., he was inducted into that city[apos]s Hall of Fame in April 1990.
