James Leonard

Biography

Over his four-year career with the Big Red track team, he won seven Heptagonal titles in his specialty, the triple jump, taking three outdoor and four straight indoor crowns in that event. He set the Heps and Barton Hall records en route to winning the four indoor championships and was named the outstanding performer of the indoor Heps in 1974 and was co-recipient of the award as a senior. He broke his own outdoor Heps TJ record in 1974 after establishing the mark as a freshman. He placed second at the indoor IC4A championships in 1975 while placing third three times, indoors in 1972 and 1974 and outdoors in [apos]74. He was fourth in the championship flight of the Penn Relays in 1973 and placed fifth in 1974. Leonard was fifth at the outdoor U.S. Track and Field Federation Championships as a junior. A co-captain of the team as a senior, he also competed in the long jump, placing second in that event at the indoor and outdoor Heps in 1975. He is a graduate of Perry High School in Pittsburgh, Pa.
