James Lingel

Biography

He was an outstanding runner for the track team from 1950-53. As a sophomore, he placed third in the 440 at the IC4A championships, as Cornell won the team title. He ran the second leg of the record-breaking relay at the Penn Relays. As a junior, he won the outdoor Heps 440 crown and ran the third leg on the second-place 880 relay at the Penn Relays. As a senior, he ran the anchor leg on the victorious mile relay at the New York Athletic Club Games at Madison Square Garden. He placed fourth in the 60 and ran the final leg on the winning mile relay at the 1953 indoor Heps, enabling Cornell to win the team title. He set the indoor and world record in the 300-yard dash (30.5) at the 174th Regiment Indoor Games in Buffalo in 1953. He captained the team as a senior. Lingel graduated from Kenmore (N.Y.) High School.
