He was an outstanding foilsman through his varsity intercollegiate fencing career at Cornell. As a senior, he won All-America honors after placing second at the 1960 NCAA championships, but won the Illinois Memorial Award as the most accomplished performer in the tournament. He was named the NCAA[apos]s Fencer of the Year in 1960. He was head coach of fencing at Cornell from 1961-76. He compiled a 15-year overall record of 116-75 and led his 1975 team to a second-place finish at the NCAA championships and tied for the Ivy League title for the second straight year. He also coached the Cornell women[apos]s fencing team from 1971-75, compiling a five-year record of 32-1 and winning the national title in 1972 and 1973 and was second in 1974. He was named the men[apos]s coach of the year by the NCAA in 1975 and the women[apos]s coach of the year in 1972 and 1973 by the NIWFA.
