Biography

He lettered as a quarterback on the football teams of 1950 and `51. He led the Big Red in passing both seasons, completing 89 of 171 pass attempts for 1,405 career yards. He currently holds Cornell career records for passing yards per attempt (8.2) and yards per completion (15.8) and has Cornell[apos]s second-longest touchdown passing play record (90) yards. Calvo, who was injured during the 1949 season, helped Cornell to a 7-2 overall record in 1950 and a 6-3 mark in 1951. He played a role in one of the biggest upsets of the college football season in 1951, when the Big Red defeated Michigan, the defending Rose Bowl champion, 20-7, at Schoellkopf Field. He received Associated Press All-America, All-East and All-Ivy honorable mention accolades in 1951. Following graduation and after a stint in the Army in Korea from 1953-54, Calvo returned to his hometown in Bethlehem, Pa., where he was a professor, coach and administrator at Moravian College from 1955-92. He was head football coach from 1955-76 and then again from 1982-86, compiling a 27-year overall record of 122-102-9. He also coached basketball at Moravian for 10 years with a 118-76 mark and spent seven years as the school[apos]s baseball coach, posting an 88-85 record.
